Very exciting news on a number of fronts

1. The South Florida family (Ruthie and Mel; Cherilyn David Sydni and Jesse; Araya Ari Aaron and Aaden; Joan and Ron, Bobbi and Jay and their families) have weathered the storm and are picking up the pieces after Hurricane Matthew.
2. Cherilyn's mom is showing signs of recovery (Thank God!) after serious illness.
3. Breaking News: Yours truly has just been discharged from Holy Cross Hospital. At 7 p.m. they're bringing me to Manor Pines Rehabilitation Center, 1601 NE 26th Street in Wilton Manors for 7-10 days of intensive physical therapy. The PT who visited me here said I was already making terrific progress!

Day After Surgery - Update 8: power nap

Having run a marathon and after doing his CrossFit workout, Dad was a little uncomfortable.  So a little shot of morphine, and... he is now singing the Muppet movie and counting unicorns.  Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

Surgery Day - Update 6: last update of the day

Dad told his first joke since waking up. It is pouring outside, sooooo..."It is raining cats and dogs, and I stepped in a poodle."  On that note,  I think I need to do the say good night. lila tov.

Surgery Day - Update 5: Extubated!

Yea! they took the breathing tube out and Dad is breathing on his own.  Has not told a pun yet, but has only been a few minutes.  I'm sure a bad pun is coming soon....

Dad is tired and sleepy but able to talk and knows what is happening.  Tomorrow, more tubes and wires come out, and that is how they gauge the recovery.  The more things they can take out, the better he is doing.

Surgery Day - Update 4: live from Cardiovascular ICU

(whisper)  ok...we are here inside the CV-ICU/recovery unit.  Dad is hooked up to a lot of shit -- IVs, tubes, etc. and still sleeping.  the good news is, the RN "recovering" him keeps saying positive things under her breath as she works.

Surgery Day - Update 3 - Surgical Success

REPORTING LIVE: Dr. Justice just came out to tell me that surgery was a success.  Quadruple bypass!  4x... (you know they probably just charge by-the-bypass.)  Dad is being tucked-in in recovery.  I should be able to visit in 30 minutes.

Surgery Day - Update 2

nothing new to report...other than that i have already had too much coffee.  i asked the volunteer for a halftime update, and she reports, as expected -- the team is still working. no further news.

i think i'll go get a cup of coffee... DJL

Surgery Day - Update 1, Entry by DJL

Good Morning.  Dad is currently in surgery.

I arrived here at 5:30am and got to hang out with Dad for about a half hour before they came to wheel him to pre-op.  He was, understandably, a little nervous, but we had a nice, honest, loving talk.  Dad's face really brightened up when we called Cherilyn, Sydni, and Jesse, and they wished him good luck.  We took this fabulous selfie for all to enjoy (lol)....

Then came the Uber for surgery:

I got to stay with him in pre-op... while the surgical team of RNs and Drs. asked him the same questions 10x.  What a great team! Very thorough, super friendly, and patient with the patient (and family.)

So here is the deal, for the rest of the morning and afternoon:

  • surgery should last about another 4 hours, as of the time of this post
  • post op recovery should be another hour, or so after that
  • I should be able to visit dad in the cardiac ICU after that...  so maybe 1-2pm ET?

So now, we wait.  I'll be here at Holy Cross Hospital, working away on my laptop.  Check back here for the next update.

Thursday, September 29, 2016

It's Thursday 1 pm and I'm feeling good (despite the fact that they've drawn enough blood to create another me...) They'll take me in for surgery tomorrow at 6 am, and then to recovery for a few hours, followed by a couple of days in cardiac intensive care. By next Monday--if all goes according to plan--I'll be back here
in intermediate care.

Thank you all so much for your love, your thoughts and your prayers!

The surgeon (Dr. Justice) wants me to continue on antibiotics for an extra day ... so I'm now scheduled for surgery early Friday morning.

The cardiologist here at Holy Cross (Dr. Purow) is in touch with my own cardiologist in Tamarac (Dr. Richter) ... so they are all "on the same page."

Hi all--

I'm feeling OK this morning.

Surgery will be late morning or early afternoon tomorrow (Thursday). I'll be in recovery and ICU--and therefore incommunicado--Friday and Saturday. Depending on my progress, they will probably move me back here to intermediate care on Sunday, at which time I'll be available via email and/or text.

The case manager stopped by yesterday. Towards the end of next week, again depending on my progress, I will probably move to an SNF (skilled nursing facility).

Thank you all for your thoughts, wishes and prayers. *:) happy

Love,
Jerry
